Waller and Company Jewelers

Historical Significance

Waller and Company Jewelers, a family owned and operated business in continuous operation in downtown Richmond, Virginia for over 100 years, was founded by Marcellus Carrington Waller, known as "M.C," in 1900.

M.C. Waller began his watch and clock repair career at the age of eight, repairing his grandmother's broken clock against her wishes. A self-taught businessman and entrepreneur with a third grade education, Waller worked for an insurance company while running his own grocery store and taking in watches and clocks for repair. In 1900, M.C. Waller founded M.C. Waller, Jewelers. Unable to buy tools and parts for his trade since local dealers were unwilling to sell to African Americans, Waller began making his own tools and parts. Finally, he located a company in New York who would sell to him.

Three of his sons, Junius, Richard, and Thomas, eventually joined him in business, and the name of the firm was changed to M.C. Waller & Sons Jewelers, specializing in repairing clocks and watches and performing hand engraving. In 1932, the company owned and operated multiple stores in downtown Richmond.

Waller's grandson, Richard Waller Jr., began fixing watches in his family's store at an early age, learning all aspects of watch and jewelry repair and becoming a master jeweler. In 1968, several Waller stores were consolidated and the name was changed to Waller & Company Jewelers. Since the early 1970's, Richard Waller Jr. has owned and operated the family business in conjunction with his five sisters and two sons.
